We refugees ask for the protection of our rights, violated by the film "L'Urlo. Schiavi in cambio di petrolio"
Dear Riccardo Biadene, producer of the film "L'Urlo" by Michelangelo Severgnini (2019 Kama Productions), We watched the movie and we realized that it passes off the false thesis that the refugees in Libya would like to go back to their home countries.
For years, all refugee demonstrations in Libya have been asking for one thing: to be evacuated to safe countries. It is no coincidence that we have always made our protests in front of the offices of the UNHCR, which is responsible for evacuating people to safe countries, and not in front of the offices of the IOM, which instead organizes repatriations.
When and if asked by IOM about our will to be repatriated our answer was no and will always be if the conditions in our countries of origin remain unchanged. The countries we fled from are plagued by wars, ethnic persecutions, poverty and climate change: we would risk our lives to return there.
We also realized that the film "L'Urlo" uses without any contract for release materials video and audio produced by us Refugees in Libya. Many of us recognized the video we shot and have no idea why the director - whom we don't know - used it without our consent. Many refugees have seen their face on screen or heard their voice: this has created anger and disappointment in them.
We don't want to be in this movie.
We have always filmed and released the videos of our protests to ask for evacuation to safe countries. These materials are illegally used in "L'Urlo" to ask for the repatriation to our dangerous countries of origin.
It's not legal, it's not right and it contrasts our idea of freedom of movement as a universal right.
Therefore we ask you, the producer of the film, to remove all material for which you have no legal release and consent.
We don't want to go back home and we don't want to be in your movie. We don't want to be used by your misleading intentions. If our kind request will not be acknowledged by you, we will be forced to take legal action to protect the truth, respect for our rights and the requests made to the international community by Refugees in Libya.
Kind regards,
David Yambio Refugees in Libya phone: +218910828945 email: refugeesinlibya@gmail.com
